In 1999, John and Deborah Darnell, American Egyptologists, discovered an earlier version of this first alphabet at the Wadi el-Hol valley in Egypt. ![]() Orly Goldwasser has connected the illiterate turquoise miner graffiti theory to the origin of the alphabet. In the Middle Bronze Age, an apparently "alphabetic" system known as the Proto-Sinaitic script appeared in Egyptian turquoise mines in the Sinai peninsula dated 1840 BCE, apparently left by Canaanite workers. The last known use of the Cuneiform script was in 75 CE, after which the script fell out of use. However, it was primarily used to write Sumerian. The script was used to write several ancient languages. However, after pagan temples were closed down, it was forgotten in the 5th century until the discovery of the Rosetta Stone. The script was used a fair amount in the 4th century CE. These glyphs were used as pronunciation guides for logograms, to write grammatical inflections, and, later, to transcribe loan words and foreign names. The Ancient Egyptian writing system had a set of some 24 hieroglyphs that are called uniliterals, which are glyphs that provide one sound. Main article: History of the alphabet Alphabets related to Phoenician Ancient Near Eastern alphabets The names for the Greek letters, in turn, came from the first two letters of the Phoenician alphabet: aleph, the word for ox, and bet, the word for house. The English word alphabet came into Middle English from the Late Latin word alphabetum, which in turn originated in the Greek, ἀλφάβητος ( alphábētos) it was made from the first two letters of the Greek alphabet, alpha (α) and beta (β). ![]() Some systems also used to have this system but later on abandoned it for a system similar to Latin, such as Cyrillic. However, this system is not present in all languages, such as the Latin alphabet, which adds a vowel after a character for each letter. It was used in some ancient alphabets, such as in Phoenician. This is known as acrophony It is present in some modern scripts, such as Greek, and many Semitic scripts, such as Arabic, Hebrew, and Syriac. There are also names for letters in some languages. It also means that their letters can be used as an alternative method of "numbering" ordered items, in such contexts as numbered lists and number placements. This makes them useful for purposes of collation, which allows words to be sorted in a specific order, commonly known as the alphabetical order. Īlphabets are usually associated with a standard ordering of letters. In this narrower sense, the Greek alphabet was the first true alphabet, while the Phoenician alphabet it derived from was an abjad. Broadly, abjads lack vowel indicators altogether, while abugidas represent them with diacritics added to letters. Daniels distinguishes true alphabets, which have letters representing both consonants and vowels, from both abugidas and abjads, which only have letters for consonants. Corresponding letters in the Phoenician and Latin alphabets The Phoenician system is considered the first true alphabet and is the ultimate ancestor of many modern scripts, including Arabic, Cyrillic, Greek, Hebrew, Latin, and possibly Brahmic. The first fully phonemic script was the Proto-Sinaitic script, also descending from Egyptian hieroglyphics, which was later modified to create the Phoenician alphabet. Later on, these phonemic symbols also became used to transcribe foreign words. This system was used until the 5th century AD, and fundamentally differed by adding pronunciation hints to existing hieroglyphs that had previously carried no pronunciation information. The first letters were invented in Ancient Egypt to aid writers already using Egyptian hieroglyphs, now referred to by lexicographers as the Egyptian uniliteral signs. Not all writing systems represent language in this way: a syllabary assigns symbols to spoken syllables, while logographic systems assign symbols to spoken words, morphemes, or other semantic units. Specifically, letters correspond to phonemes, the categories of sounds that can distinguish one word from another in a given language. For other uses, see Alphabet (disambiguation).Īn alphabet is a standardized set of written letters that represent particular spoken sounds in a language. For the international technology conglomerate, see Alphabet Inc. For the English alphabet in particular, see English alphabet. This article is about alphabets in general.

In cases where landmarks have disappeared or changed, municipalities and courts may step in to determine the exact boundaries and the intentions of the involved parties. Surveying this way may also be restricted by natural obstacles. There are times when the given descriptions in metes and bounds may be ambiguous, inconsistent, or erroneous, especially when the landscape has changed. Source: University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign These units of measurement are still used today. Metes and bounds are also important because of their inherent descriptiveness. Why Are Metes and Bounds Important?īecause of their descriptive nature in identifying a parcel of land, metes and bounds allow people to designate property lines and determine a value for that property based on its shape, size, location, and characteristics. Some parts of Ohio also use the metes and bounds system. Here are states that continue to use metes and bounds in combination with (or sometimes in place of) the more modern expression: Officially known as the Public Land Survey System (PLSS), the rectangular survey is a more modern way to plat or divide property for sale and settling. In the United States, the usage of metes and bounds was largely replaced by the rectangular survey via the Land Ordinance of 1785. Which States Use the Metes and Bounds System? This system is typically used for large properties where pinpoint accuracy is unnecessary or when describing irregularly shaped properties. Back then, metes and bounds were the most reliable way of recording the shape, size, location, and dimensions of property.Įven though the method is very old, metes and bounds paved the way for better land legislation and a better process for keeping track of ownership records. Landmarks have been used to identify property boundaries since ancient times, especially in Europe, where people had no concept of street addresses. Historically, “metes” referred to distance, and “bounds” referred to direction. Because they are descriptive in nature, they can be considered accurate characterizations of that particular land. Metes and bounds constitute just one part of the legal description of a parcel of land. ![]() Exclusive Discounts Find deals and discounts only available through REtipster.Professional Directories Find professional contacts, recommended by others in REtipster community.Coaches Our hand-picked list of experienced, trustworthy and reliable coaches.Tools Tested & proven online resources for real estate investors.Testimonials Our members get results! Lovecraftian horror films often include themes of paranormal religiosity. Messiah Of Evil (1973) This movie was also titled Revenge of the Screaming Dead. The movie’s atmosphere is carefully built on the contrast between ornate late-60s-era homes and a dreamlike, slow-panning representation of the disembodied energy that terrorizes the protagonists. Critic Rob Craig claims it “may be, ironically, one of the most overall successful adaptations of a Lovecraft source work ever committed to film.” It includes the Necronomicon and the gothic setting of Arkham, Massachusetts (the same setting of The Haunted Palace). Presenting itself with bold, psychedelic imagery, Daniel Haller’s film pays a loving homage to the surrealist monsters that dominate the Lovecraftian universe. Director Roger Corman distinguishes himself with his inventive special effects to create the visually rich “inhuman visions” that Dr. Descending into madness because of a near-paranormal discovery is a classic theme in Lovecraft’s works. This evokes a slew of consequences surrounding the idea that the doctor has gained a power too great for a single human being to wield. Xavier creates eyedrops which “expand” human vision beyond our range of color and into X-ray and ultraviolet wavelengths. Miraculously executed on a $300,000 budget, this independent science-fiction film is a prime example of weird horror: An ambitious Dr. X: The Man with the X-Ray Eyes (1963) Director Roger Corman said the success of this film was “a miracle” given the budget. The Necronomicon as a symbol would go on to inspire great horror directors such as Guillermo del Toro and John Carpenter. This is one of the first times it is represented in cinema. This is important for Lovecraft fans, as the Necronomicon is the basis of all weird elements of a Lovecraftian tale. He has also included the use of the Necronomicon, a fictional book of magic invented by Lovecraft and heavily featured in his mythos.
